If you have ever experienced physical pain or strain in the workplace, then it may be time for you to take a look at ergonomics. By investing in ergonomics, you will see a drastic difference in your workplace, comfort, and efficiency.

So what exactly is ergonomics? The dictionary defines ergonomics as an applied science that coordinates the design of devices, systems, and physical working conditions with the capacities and requirements of the worker. In other words, ergonomics is essentially the study of how humans interact with objects and devices in the workplace. The end goal of ergonomics is to create a workplace that accommodates everyone's capabilities and limitations.

Ergonomics can be relevant in many areas however, it most commonly applies to a workplace setting. Most often, ergonomics is used to create a more comfortable workspace for an employee. There are many everyday office products that have been engineered to be ergonomically friendly, including:

  • Desks: Sit-to-stand or adjustable desks allow for breaking up long sedentary periods
  • Chairs: Ergonomic chairs typically feature lower back support to help reduce tension
  • Keyboards: With an ergonomic keyboard, you will be able to type while resting your hands in a more natural and comfortable position
  • Mounts: Raising your monitor to the proper viewing height and using the tilt feature helps to reduce neck and eye strain
  • And more!

Products that have been tweaked in terms of ergonomics are said to have "ergonomic design." For example, ergonomic desks will adjust to the appropriate height for the user. Some desks are even designed to adjust to a full standing position. Ergonomic computer mounts adjust to be at the appropriate height for each user. You can even find ergonomic keyboards which are designed with a slight slope to fit a more natural hand position.

Benefits of an Ergonomic Workplace

There are several benefits to having an ergonomically friendly workplace. Some of those benefits include:

  • Improved productivity
  • Improved work quality
  • Improved employee engagement
  • Improved workplace safety

These are just a few of the benefits of ergonomics in the workplace. Ergonomics has the ability to drastically change your work environment for the better. Not only is ergonomics good for the business, it is good for its employees! Many leading companies are using the study of ergonomics to upgrade their office environments. John Deere was actually one of the first companies to embrace ergonomics. Since beginning their ergonomics efforts in 1979, they saw an 83% decrease in back injuries and a 23% decrease in worker compensation costs. Honeywell, an electronics manufacturer, spent nearly $355,000 on ergonomic upgrades and saw productivity increases of 37% and $2.1 million per year overall savings. Those numbers alone should convince you of the benefits of ergonomics!

It stood out to me when you mentioned that ergonomics are most commonly applied to a workplace setting. I would imagine that employees would be happier if they have a comfortable work environment. It would be important for managers to make sure that they maintain a comfortable environment for their employees. https://ergohealthconsult.com/services

This is so important! I used to sit in a chair that was too big for me and never got comfortable with working at a desk job all day. Now I’m mindful of my positioning all the time. I know a number of people who have gotten hurt or aches and pains by practicing poor ergonomics.

Thanks for the info and tips. I definitely need to work on this. My problem though is that whether standing or sitting, after a few hours I catch myself slouching. I think I’m going to try one of those back support braces offered for posture. Thanks for the info and tips.

Own Your Space: How a Privacy Panel Transforms Any Desk Into a Real Workspace

This post makes the case that a well-defined workspace is not a luxury — it's a performance tool. Built around VIVO's privacy panel lineup, the blog speaks directly to the growing population of workers who have quietly lost ownership of their space: the WFH professional fighting distractions at home, the hybrid worker who never knows which desk they'll land at, and the open-office employee surrounded by constant noise and movement. Through a conversational, insight-driven lens, the post explores the psychology behind physical workspace boundaries, explains why environment affects output more than most people realize, and walks readers through how a privacy panel — whether clamp-on, freestanding, or pegboard-style — is one of the simplest upgrades that makes any desk feel intentional, focused, and genuinely yours. Product highlights are woven throughout in a way that feels editorial rather than promotional, with VIVO's panel lineup positioned as practical solutions to problems readers already know they have.
